To help classify and understand human encounters with extraterrestrial phenomena, Dr. Steven Greer developed a framework to categorize the different types of contact experiences.
Close Encounter Zero Degree (CI-0) – Occurs when a human being sees a UFO at a great distance. This is the contact established when an ordinary person claims to have experienced the observation or sighting of an unidentified flying object, without necessarily having close contact with it. This is the most reported type of close encounter in the world.
Close Encounter of the First Kind (CI-1) – This type of close encounter is characterized by the observation of a UFO at a short distance. In this contact, the person is able to observe and report details about the UFO, such as its shape, lights, and other relevant information.
Close Encounter of the Second Kind (CI-2) – This type of contact occurs when a human being sees a UFO landing or flying over a nearby area. This type of contact usually leaves some mark or evidence, such as tracks on the ground, fragments or gaps in the vegetation. Observers of the phenomenon also often report disturbances to animals, caused by the UFO.
Close Encounter of the Third Kind (CI-3) – In this close encounter, the human being is able to observe the crew of a spacecraft, without maintaining effective communication with them. The extraterrestrial beings can be seen inside or outside the UFO.
Close Encounter of the Fourth Kind (CI-4) – This contact involves the observation of the UFO crew and also some level of communication with the extraterrestrial beings. This communication can be established by voice, gestures or telepathy.
Close Encounter of the Fifth Kind (CI-5) – This is the strongest and most direct type of immediate contact between extraterrestrial beings and humans. It occurs in cases of abduction and when a human being enters the spaceship, voluntarily or not.
Close Encounter of the Sixth Kind (CI-6) – Type of interaction with hostile aliens, in this type of contact the human is injured or killed.
Close Encounter of the Seventh Kind (CI-7) – Type of encounter where a mating occurs between a human and an extraterrestrial entity, producing a hybrid being.
Recorded instances in such encounters with extraterrestrials:
